Canopy What outdoor furniture exactly is can be subjective and interpreted in different ways. Is a canopy outdoor furniture? It depends on the person who you are speaking with. No, it isn’t made of wood and no, you can’t sit on it, but it still is an important item to have on your patio or in your yard.

So, is it really “furniture?” It depends on your definition. Here are some of the features of a canopy. Look at them and determine for yourself if it is furniture or not.

•Usually big, but sometimes little – It is impossible to use a blanket statement and expect to be able to describe these items size. The reason why is quite simple. Just as most things come in a variety of sizes, so do these coverings.

The reason for the different sizes is because they can be used for many different things. For example, if you are having a big family reunion at the park, then you are going to make sure that you have lots of food, lots of drinks, lots of games . . . and lots of shade.

That’s where these coverings come in. They can provide a lot of shade for a lot of people at one time. Therefore you don’t have to worry about family members leaving early because of the heat.

Likewise, sometimes a big canopy means nothing but trouble. Say for example that you are getting ready to tailgate with your friends and family in the stadium parking lot. Because there is not a lot of space, you have to keep things compact.

One good way to do this is by getting and using a smaller covering. By having a smaller covering over your grill or over you and your friends, you are less likely to get in the way of others or be asked to take it down because it is too large.

•You can’t sit on it, but you can sit under it – Unless you are wanting to get hurt, you should not attempt to sit on top of these tents. It is unlikely they would hold you. Aside from that, it’s just plain dumb. But, you certainly can sit under these and you can do it for hours at a time.

Think about it, when you are at an outdoor gathering, what is it that tends to break up the party more than anything else? Nope, not your crazy uncle. It’s the weather. That means that if you had a way of weather-proofing your outing, you and your friends and family will be much more apt to stay put for a longer period of time.

• There are a variety of colors – Typically, most of the kinds of canopy that you see are white. There is a reason for this. Because the darker colors, like black or dark blue, attract more sunlight, this means that those who are sitting underneath one on a hot July day may find themselves cooking hotter than the steaks on the grill.

In order to avoid becoming a flambé, you should buy either a white covering, or at least a covering that is light in color. White is usually the safest because it doesn’t stand out too much. Also, the light that does get in doesn’t turn pink or purple or green or whatever other color the covering could be made with.

So, is a canopy furniture? Maybe. Maybe not. It does not really matter how you classify it. The important thing is that you realize how these coverings can assist you during your time outside.
