Even
though there are some who believe that may think outdoor chaise lounge
chairs were first introduced around modern pools, the absolute truth
is that these chairs are much older. In fact, they are so old that
they were first created in Europe in the 1500s.
Although most people are unaware of this, the original name for these
kinds of chairs was chaise longue. In French this means literally
“long chair.” After some time, the word was adopted into
American English and the spelling of the word was conveniently changed
into lounge because those who would be using the chairs would be lounging
in them.
These chairs are now available in many places, but their origination
is traced back to the early days of the French Renaissance. The chairs
were at first made from a curved wood. These French chairs were not
completely original. The fact is that there were actually Greek chairs
that were similar. The big difference, however, is the fact that these
chairs were actually first designed for people to lay on their sides
– not their backs. The French design was made exclusively for
people to lay on their backs and relax their spines.
Outdoor chaise lounge chairs were finally introduced to America when
there was heavy immigration from Europe in the 1830s. The style of
these chairs caught on quickly among Americans.
