Outdoor
fire pits can be quite nice to use if you are trying to stay warm,
cooking up some food, boiling water, or merely roasting marshmallows.
However, if you use one, there are some safety tips that should be
taken into account.
Sometimes you can find a pit that has already been created and used.
These are desirable because it requires less work for you to have
to put another one together from the very beginning.
However, sometimes you may want to create your own pit. While this
is possible, it can be dangerous if you don’t do it the right
way.
If pit fires are allowed where you are at and you plan on using one,
be sure to only build fires in designated fire pits. This helps ensue
the safety of many people. If there are no designated fire pits, it
would be wise to find an open area away from things like low hanging
branches, miscellaneous groundcover, and dry vegetation.
Also, clear a 10-foot circle around the specific area where you plan
to build a fire and then create some kind of a fire bed or pit. Fire
beds can be made of a number of substances that you can find around
the campfire.
These items that you can use to build a pit include rocks, silt,
clay, sand or any other non-flammable materials available. A small
pit that is dug to be approximately 4-10 inches deep can actually
serve very well as a fire bed.
An extra way to ensure safety and to minimize risk is to surround
your pit with small rocks. Doing something as simple as this can provide
an extra layer of protection for you and others. This in turn will
help keep you safer.
While outdoor fire pits can indeed prove to be a lot of fun, you
should remember to take the proper safety precautions because your
fun time could turn into a dangerous time in a hurry.
